The Gottwalts of Longfellow

Family, faith, hard work, and volunteer service: these themes flow through the lives of Elmer and Joanne Gottwalt, Longfellow residents for the last 52 years. Their lives are a testament to what makes a community strong and lasting.

Elmer Gottwalt and Joanne Borough first met in April, 1953 at the Marigold Ballroom on Nicollet Avenue and danced to the polka and “old-time” music of the Whoopee John Orchestra. The previous year each had come to Minneapolis looking for work, Elmer from a small town west of St. Cloud, Joanne from Duluth. They married in July, 1955, and soon began renting in the Longfellow neighborhood where they have lived ever since.

Upon moving to Minneapolis Joanne found work right away at Crane Plumbing and Heating and later went to work for the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) for 10 years, even though she is a steadfast Roman Catholic! She retired from ELCA in 1995.

                                                           (Continued on page 2)

(Gottwalts, continued from front page.)

Elmer had a tougher time but found work at the Buckingham Trucking Company. After 11 years there, he acquired a two-year degree at the University of Minnesota, and got a position at the Minnesota Department of Transportation doing maintenance and plowing freeways, a job he retired from 32 years later in 1997.

All this while, the Gottwalts had four children. In 1956 Joanne gave birth to her first child, Anne, followed by, in the space of six years, Kevin, John, and Michelle. Educated in area schools—Sanford, Roosevelt, Regina, St. Helena, Seward, and Longfellow Schools—they all moved on to successful careers, Anne as a Registered Nurse at

the University of Minnesota, Kevin in manage-ment for a local company (AGA), John in housekeeping at the Mall of America, and Michelle for UPS in Fargo.

Kevin and Michelle each have three children, Anne and John are single. All four Gottwalt children grew up at 36th and Minnehaha, the first family home, where the Rail Station Bar & Grill now stands. After 35 years there, they moved to 38th Street and 40th Avenue and have lived there for 15 years.

Elmer and Joanne have been devout members of St. Albert the Great Church, and before that at Church of St. Helena. Decade-after-decade they have helped with church fundraising dinners, festivities, raffles, cleaning, and any job that needed doing. Elmer belongs to Holy Name and Joanne to Rosary Altar.

They are members of Howe Seniors, St. Helena Seniors, and both have been active in Teamster Retirees. Both are regulars at Longfellow/

Seward Healthy Seniors events. Joanne is particularly known for the delicious breads and treats she regularly brings to Senior Socials and bake sales, and for her phone volunteer work.

Elmer comes from a German family of 13 children and is fifth from the youngest. Joanne comes from an Irish/German family of eight children and is third from the youngest. They have traveled widely, having visited all but four states in the U.S. and many of the provinces of Canada.

For a short while, right after high school, Joanne entered the Benedictine convent in Duluth. She soon decided that convent life was not for her and she came to Minneapolis. The convent’s loss has been our gain!
